What is the difference between a cash discount and a card surcharge?
A cash discount reduces the standard price for paying cash. A surcharge adds to the price for a card payment. Renaming an added card fee does not make it a discount.
Follow the price from the page to the receipt
Visa’s rules page permits cash discounts as a reduction from the standard price. Its merchant guidance explains that displayed card prices and the final card total must agree; adding a fee at payment can be treated as a surcharge.
For a fuel-order page, review the advertised price, order summary and final receipt together. A customer should understand the total before committing. Ask your acquirer to review the proposed arrangement and have qualified counsel check the applicable pricing and consumer rules before you configure it.
This is a distinction between payment approaches, not a recommendation to introduce either one. It does not establish what your state permits or what a particular checkout supports.
FAQ
Can we advertise a lower price and add a “cash discount adjustment” for cards?
A label does not resolve a card-price increase. Have the complete price display and payment flow reviewed.
Does this page set our fuel price?
No. Use your actual approved pricing and terms. No example price or fee is being proposed here.
